Nate's Scarf

December 2004
My brother Nate and his wife Krys live in San Francisco. Shipping them Christmas gifts can get expensive. Knitted gifts are lightweight, so when I found some yarn at the Knitting Basket that I liked, I decided to make them each a scarf.

The yarn for Nate's scarf was made in Germany. It's Loft Color by Zitron. The color is #535 and is a mix of dark brown and black. It's 100% merino wool, with a smooth, feltlike texture with a slight sheen. It knitted up quickly on size 11 needles. It even was masculine-looking.

Hanging from the trunk
There wasn't a pattern for this scarf. I looked through The Big Book of Knitting and found a simple but interesting stitch pattern I liked. It formed a continuing pattern of diamonds, created by alternating knit and purl stitches. Two and a half balls of yarn and a long scarf later, it was finished. It worked for this scarf, and the sheen of the yarn made it look pretty neat. I added some short tassels.

Detail
Notice how subtle the pattern is. Depending on the light, it's either visible or not visible. The scarf is also somewhat sheer. Note in the top picture how the brass of the trunk can be seen through the scarf. This could be a good or a bad trait, depending on who you ask. Personally, I think it looks pretty groovy.
