Baby Moroz

Begun November 2003, Finished March 2004
Update!

A friend of mine at work is going to have a baby in May. Her being the first friend of mine who is my age, in wedlock, college educated, and having a child on purpose, I had to celebrate by knitting. They won't find out what they're having until the baby is born, so everything is yellow. I don't approve of clothing babies in manmade fibers, so these garments are infused with the lovely touch and feel of cotton, the fabric of our lives. Cotton is also a good fabric for a summer baby. The yarn is CottonTots by Bernat, and the color is Sunshine. The yarn was inexpensive, soft, and easy to work with, but if I were to try it again, I would use something a little more chunky and less slubby, like Rowan All-Seasons Cotton. Rowan tends to have gross-looking yellows, though.

Beanie

This is the 2nd project I ever worked on, and my first 3-dimensional garment, so it isn't perfect. I got it and the rest of Baby Moroz's projects from Erika Knight's book Simple Knits For Cherished Babies. I made it twice. The first time, I made it in a 12-month size, and didn't make a gauge swatch. When I finished, it could fit my own head. It not being my color, I destroyed it, and made this one the next day, in newborn size. One of the decreases is off by one stitch, but other than that, it isn't bad.

In June, I knitted a similar hat in light blue acrylic for my friend Kevin, who had a baby (well, he didn't, per se, but you know what I mean). Hopefully I will be able to meet Zachary soon. Special thanks goes to Katie and her mom, who provided the yarn.

Booties

This is the 3rd project I ever worked on, so it's not too much better. I made the first bootie twice because the pattern confused me and I screwed up. This was a fun project. The pattern does not call for drawstrings, but I added them for three reasons:

  1. I accidentally knitted them in 3-6 month size, when the rest of the outfit was in newborn size (I knitted them a few months apart). Unless the baby has unusually large feet, he or she would't be wearing the whole outfit at the same time unless I did something about it. I thought the drawstrings might allow them to be worn earlier.
  2. My mom reminded me that babies kick off their booties, no matter how well they fit. Drawstrings will tether them on. The whole thing was actually her idea.
  3. There was a line of crossed stitches under where the drawstring ended up being. I had dropped some stitches, and picked them up incorrectly.
I made the booties again in a miniature version in fingering weight which was part of Mommy's baby shower corsage. They were about an inch long.

Cardigan

My first sweater!

This project was a pain in the butt. Fun, but a pain in the butt. The issue was that I didn't own any straight pins, so I couldn't easily attach the sleeves to the body. I finally broke down and bought straight pins, so that issue was resolved. It also was the first project where I had to pick up a huge number of stitches, so I had a time with that. The ribbing is uneven due to the slubby nature of the yarn. The buttons have Peter Rabbit on them. Yippee!!!

Update!

It's a boy! The very handsome Marc Jr. was born May 18th weighing 7 lbs, 2 oz. I can't wait until his mom lets me buy her a beer.
