Apparently this summer was the time to have babies where Jeff works. Jack was born in September to Shane and Michelle. I had heard in advance that it was to be a boy, so I picked a pattern, picked a yarn and got going.
This project took quite a bit longer than I expected. First of all, I started it, put it down, and picked it up two months later, which made it just seem like it took longer. The second front piece got frogged when I was almost done; the gauge was significantly different from the other front half (how did that happen?). This project also has a good deal of finishing involved, for which I procrastinated greatly.
It came with me on vacation. It probably had fragments of blueberries and sand in it before I washed it.
I have some mixed opinions about the yarn. One thing I liked about it was that it blocked very nicely. I probably could have blocked it to fit anything... a small elephant, or maybe a small cat. On the other hand, I know now that I'm not big on gajillion-ply yarns. They split often. Who knew?
The pattern was from Debbie Bliss' The Baby Knits Book. This book has a nice variety of patterns, some very simple, some rather complicated. I decided to live the full Debbie Bliss experience and use the recommended yarn for the project: Debbie Bliss Wool Cotton, a 50% merino wool, 50% cotton blend.
The jacket is double-breasted (no, really?), with two buttons at the top, under the collar, and two buttons in the middle, as seen in the photos. The edging is done in seed stitch, and the pockets are "hidden." The sleeves are folded back. They look short, but this is because the jacket is drop shouldered; the shoulder seam is expected to hang off the shoulder by a good amount.
