Charlotte's Web Shawl

Begun October 2004, Completed December 2004

This project was cool! It's called Charlotte's Web, and it's a knitted lace shawl.

The pattern and yarn were purchased online from ThreadBear Fiber Art Studio in Lansing, Michigan. The yarn is the hand-painted KPPPM (Koigu Painter's Palette Premium Merino), which is a 100% merino sockweight yarn. The yarn color varied by skein... it tended to stick to olives, browns, and oranges most of the time, but occasionally ran reddish or dark navy. I believe the way it worked was that ThreadBear created their own colorways by selecting from 5 various related colors of KPPPM. Their stock was low, Charlotte's Web being a very popular project, but I managed to find this colorway and it is purty.

Modeling

If you use the Charlotte's Web pattern, keep track of exactly where you are in the pattern. I counted the number of stitches at every row. If the number was off, I would count the number of stitches in each half to try to find exactly where I went wrong. For each row of the pattern, I calculated how many stitches were supposed to be in that row. Keep close track of what row you are on, too. With knitted lace, it is amazing how difficult it is to correct mistakes that aren't nipped in the bud. Closeup

The pattern calls for some crocheted edging and some fringe, but in the interest of time I omitted it. It looks fine without it. Mom doesn't like fringe anyway, and I made it for her. To the right you will see Charlotte's Web right after it was blocked on our futon. It's as wide as the length of a double bed! Whole Thing

Here's the back. Ignore my goofy-looking face. ---> Back
